A Vuillard Diptych, Drawing at The Barbican and Crits

Sneaking around The National Gallery with my Sennelier oil pastels (again) was a bit intense this week, but I managed to study a wonderful Vuillard diptych and had my most enjoyable day yet:

Oil Pastel on Primed Paper

Fun fact 👀 The two paintings actually used to be one, but Vuillard decided to cut the composition down the middle and create two separate pieces.

As for my Wednesday core day we had crits, and I had to face the reality that I’ve been too intertwined with my favourite artist’s tropes (including Vuillard of course). One problem I certainly have to address is the fact that I have too many references with me whenever I’m making work, so naturally, those references seem to be dominating my visual language.

Going forward I’ll be ditching my references, possibly only absorbing limited colour schemes and trying to push my imagination more when working from observation - and speaking of observation, I took a trip to The Barbican and did a few ink studies in my sketchbook:

Make sure to join me next week for my last week of term, and do sign up if you’d like to be notified. That’s all from me today, see you next week!
